The Story of Digger and Bob

A friend of mine (I'll call him Bob) recently told me about how, when he was a boy, he got into a lot of fights. One day the opponent that skinny little Bob dreaded most challenged him in front of all Bob's friends. The challenge came from a big kid named Digger, who had been held back in school several times because he couldn't progress to the next grade levels very well. Folks called him Digger because they thought all he'd be good for was digging ditches, and that's pretty much what Digger thought of himself, too.

I can't remember why Digger wanted to fight Bob. Anyway, Bob and Digger tussled, and Bob was taking a beating. Then Digger got Bob in a choke hold that spelled doom for Bob, but in desperation, Bob bit into Digger's arm as hard as he could. Sure enough, Digger wailed in pain, let Bob loose, and went running off to the school infirmary to get patched up. Bob had won the fight.

The next day, Digger waited outside at the end of the school day, and when Bob walked out he expected Digger to pounce. But Digger just looked at him and said, "I learned something from you yesterday". Bob sheepishly asked him what that was, and Digger said, "I learned that anybody can win".

That was a valuable lesson for Digger, who had always thought of himself as a loser. But he proved himself to be pretty smart that day, because he learned that anybody can win.

NEVER GIVE UP!
Bill Lear never finished high school but went on to earn over 100 patents. Learjet, 8-track tapes, the car radio, Motorola, and many others. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do this or that. Go for it; chase your dream until it becomes reality.
One of my best friends was thrown out of church when he was a teenager, but ended up with over 300 churches around the world. He listened to God and simply did was God told him to do.

Local First Arizona

Click here for the Local First Arizona website

OnSite OilChange is happy to announce that we are now a member of Local First Arizona. Here's some info from their website:

What is Local First Arizona?

Local First Arizona is a non-profit organization working to strengthen communities and local economies through supporting, maintaining and celebrating locally owned businesses throughout the state of Arizona.

Mission

Local First Arizona seeks to promote, support, and celebrate a vibrant and sustainable Arizona economy by educating citizens about local business ownership, social equity, cultural diversity, environmental kinship, and collaboration.

Studies have shown that for every $100 spent in a locally owned business, roughly $42 remains right here in Arizona, while for the same $100 spent in a national chain store, only $13 remains here. Consumers have grown leery of the false sense of savings promised by national chain stores, and are becoming acutely aware of the homogenization of our communities. As a result, an explosion of sorts is occurring here and everywhere, as people look to define a sense of place, community, and quality of life for their families and their futures.  Check out Local First website for some great local businesses, including special offers.

Oil Changes, yes, but also Happiness (Hey, why not?) :-)

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
- Mahatma Gandhi

“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. “ - Harriet Beecher Stowe

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you." - 1 Peter 5:6, 7

22 Positive Habits of Happy People

What’s the secret to being happy? You can learn how to do it, just as you can learn any other skill. Those who are happy tend to follow a certain set of habits that create peace in their lives; if you learn to apply these habits in your own life, there’s a good chance you’ll be happy too.
The featured article compiled 22 such behaviors that you can use to enhance your life and your happiness:

1. Let go of grudges
Forgiving and forgetting is necessary for your own happiness, as holding a grudge means you’re also holding onto resentment, anger, hurt and other negative emotions that are standing in the way of your own happiness. Letting go of a grudge frees you from negativity and allows more space for positive emotions to fill in.
2. Treat everyone with kindness
Kindness is not only contagious, it’s also proven to make you happier. When you’re kind to others, your brain produces feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters like serotonin and you’re able to build strong relationships with others, fostering positive feelings all around.
3. Regard your problems as challenges
Change your internal dialogue so that anytime you have a “problem” you view it as a challenge or a new opportunity to change your life for the better. Eliminate the word “problem” from your mind entirely.
4. Express gratitude for what you have
People who are thankful for what they have are better able to cope with stress, have more positive emotions, and are better able to reach their goals. The best way to harness the positive power of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal or list, where you actively write down exactly what you’re grateful for each day. Doing so has been linked to happier moods, greater optimism and even better physical health.
5. Dream big
Go ahead and dream big, as you’ll be more likely to accomplish your goals. Rather than limiting yourself, when you dream big you’re opening your mind to a more optimistic, positive state where you have the power to achieve virtually anything you desire.
6. Don’t sweat the small stuff
If the issue you’re mad about will be irrelevant a year, a month, a week or even a day from now, why sweat it? Happy people know how to let life’s daily irritations roll off their back.
7. Speak well of others
It may be tempting to gather around the office water cooler to get and give the daily gossip, but talking negatively about others is like taking a bath in negative emotions; your body soaks them up. Instead, make it a point to only say positive, nice words about other people, and you’ll help foster more positive thinking in your own life as well.
8. Avoid making excuses
It’s easy to blame others for your life’s failures, but doing so means you’re unlikely to rise past them. Happy people take responsibility for their mistakes and missteps, then use the failure as an opportunity to change for the better.
9. Live in the present
Allow yourself to be immersed in whatever it is you’re doing right now, and take time to really be in the present moment. Avoid replaying past negative events in your head or worrying about the future; just savor what’s going on in your life now.
10. Wake up at the same time every morning
Getting up at the same time every day (preferably an early time) is deceptively simple. Doing so will help regulate your circadian rhythm so you’ll have an easier time waking and likely feel more energized. Plus, the habit of rising early every day is one shared by many successful people, as it enhances your productivity and focus.
11. Don’t compare yourself to others
Your life is unique, so don’t measure your own worth by comparing yourself to those around you. Even regarding yourself as better than your peers is detrimental to your happiness, as you’re fostering judgmental feelings and an unhealthy sense of superiority. Measure your own success based on your progress alone, not that of others.
12. Surround yourself with positive people
The saying “misery loves company” is entirely true. That’s why you need to choose friends who are optimistic and happy themselves, as you will be surrounded with positive energy.
13. Realize that you don’t need others’ approval
It’s important to follow your own dreams and desires without letting naysayers stand in your way. It’s fine to seek others’ opinions, but happy people stay true to their own hearts and don’t get bogged down with the need for outside approval.
14. Take time to listen
Listening helps you soak in the wisdom of others and allows you to quiet your own mind at the same time. Intense listening can help you feel content while helping you gain different perspectives.
15. Nurture social relationships
Positive social relationships are a key to happiness, so be sure you make time to visit with friends, family and your significant other.
16. Pray
Prayer is not a mysterious practice reserved only for clergy and the religiously devout. Prayer is simply talking with God — listening to and talking with him. Believers can pray from the heart, freely, spontaneously, and in their own words. If prayer is a difficult area for you, get with someone who can help you learn basic principles of prayer and how to apply them in your life.
17. Eat well
What you eat directly impacts your mood and energy levels in both the short and long term. Whereas eating right can prime your body and brain to be in a focused, happy state, eating processed and/or junk foods will leave you sluggish and has also been shown to help cause diseases.
18. Exercise
Exercise boosts levels of health-promoting brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which may help buffer some of the effects of stress and also relieve some symptoms of depression. Rather than viewing exercise as a medical tool to lose weight, prevent disease, and live longer – all benefits that occur in the future – focus on viewing exercise as a daily tool to immediately enhance your frame of mind, reduce stress and feel happier. Try to find ways to do it that you can enjoy.
19. Live minimally
Clutter has a way of sucking the energy right out of you and replacing it with feelings of chaos. Clutter is an often-unrecognized source of stress that prompts feelings of anxiety, frustration, distraction and even guilt, so give your home and office a clutter makeover, purging it of the excess papers, files, knick knacks and other “stuff” that not only takes up space in your physical environment, but also in your mind.
20. Be honest
Every time you lie, your stress levels are likely to increase and your self-esteem will crumble just a little bit more. Plus, if others find out you’re a liar it will damage your personal and professional relationships. Telling the truth, on the other hand, boosts your mental health and allows others to build trust in you. Also, it's a lot easier to remember the truth than a bunch of lies!
21. Establish personal control
As much as possible, avoid letting other people dictate the way you live. Instead, establish personal control in your life that allows you to fulfill your own goals and dreams, as well as a great sense of personal self-worth.
22. Accept what cannot be changed
Not everything in your life is going to be perfect, and that’s perfectly all right. Happy people learn to accept injustices and setbacks in their life that they cannot change, and instead put their energy on changing what they can control for the better. Be like water... maybe that sounds silly, but when water comes to an obstacle it simply goes around it or under it or over it!

You are what you eat, so here's a good snack for your mind.

“Just know, when you truly want success, you’ll never give up on it. No matter how bad the situation may get.”

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, or worn. It is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace & gratitude.” - Denis Waitley

“Go where you are celebrated – not tolerated. If they can’t see the real value of you, it’s time for a new start.”

“Don’t be afraid to stand for what you believe in, even if that means standing alone.”

“The only thing that stands between you and your dream is the will to try and the belief that it is actually possible.” – Joel Brown

“Three things you cannot recover in life: a WORD after it’s said, a MOMENT after it’s missed and TIME after it’s gone. Be Careful!”

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”

“When the past calls, let it go to voicemail, believe me, it has nothing new to say.”

“Life has two rules: #1 Never quit. #2 Always remember rule # 1.”

How to "jump start" a car that has a dead battery:

1. Position both cars close together so the jump leads will reach both batteries.

2. Then connect the car battery booster cables in this order ;

a. Connect (+) positive red cable to the (+) positive terminal on the dead battery.
b. Connect the other end of the (+) positive red cable to (+) positive terminal on the working car.
c. Connect (-) negative black cable to (-) negative terminal on the working car.
d. Connect the other end of the (-) negative cable to the (-) negative terminal on the dead battery.

3. You are now ready to start the working car's engine. Turn off all electrical equipment on the working car (heater, lights, radio, etc.) so that all the battery power is getting used to jump start the dead battery. Let the working car run for a minute or so before you try to start the dead one. Revving the engine in the working car a little bit will produce more current and help with jumping the dead battery.

4. Now try and start the dead battery engine by turning the ignition. If it sounds like it is going to start but will not quite go, then rev the working car for a little while longer before trying the dead battery again.

5. When the dead battery has started and is running, remove the jump leads.
Do this in reverse order:

a. Disconnect (-) negative black cable from the terminal on dead battery.
b. Disconnect (-) negative black cable from the (-) negative terminal on the working car.
c. Disconnect (+) positive red cable from the (+) positive terminal on the working car.
d. Disconnect (+) positive red cable from the (+) positive terminal on the dead battery.
